Can I run WSUS on Windows Server 2003, Web Edition? |
| WSUS will run on a Web Edition server; however only in front-end mode. The Web Edition requires the installation of a back-end database server, because
WMSDE cannot be installed on Web Edition. MSDE2000 can be installed on Web
Edition and used as a WSUS database, but you should be fully informed of the
variations in each of these scenearios: (a) Windows Server 2003 Web Edition with back-end SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition (Has SQL CAL requirements.) (b) Windows Server 2003 Web Edition with MSDE2000 Release A (Has size and performance limitations on database.) (c) Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with WMSDE (No size or performance limitations; no requirement for SQL CALs.) and make an appropriate decision for your environment. Note that clients updating from WSUS on a Web Edition server in a DMZ must still possess valid Windows Server CALs for the organization hosting the WSUS server. WSUS can definitely be of help in your situation, but I think you'll be much more satisfied with installing the default installation on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, than you will be dealing with either of the two Web Edition solutions described. |
